Audi to run Müller and de Vries in rookie test

Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler will run Nico Müller and Nyck de Vries in Formula E’s first rookie test.

The test, which is set to take place after the Marrakesh ePrix, is for drivers who don’t have an e-license and have never driven in the series before.

“The mid-season test is a unique opportunity,” said Audi team principal Allan McNish.

“Nico and Nyck are going to drive our e-tron FE04 for a number of test kilometres which will give them a good impression of the car and the things that are special in Formula E.

“Nico already belongs to the Audi family and we’ve been closely watching Nyck’s career in recent years. Both have their roots in single-seater racing and will no doubt manage well.”

Müller has spent the past four years racing for Audi in the DTM championship. He took his first win with the team last season at the Norisring and finished 12th in the championship this year.

The 25-year-old last raced a single seater in the 2013 Formula Renault 3.5 championship, and has previous experience in GP3.

“I’ve been watching Formula E as a fan for quite some time but, unfortunately, only on television,” Müller said.

“When I visit ABT Sportsline, the Formula E race car is often parked alongside my DTM car – that’s when I fancy driving it, so I’m all the more excited about this opportunity.”

He’ll run alongside Nyck de Vries, who spent 2017 racing with Rapax and Racing Engineering in the Formula 2 championship, picking up a win in Monaco. He’s previously raced with DAMS in FR3.5 and ART Grand Prix in GP3.

Lucas di Grassi will be on hand to act as an instructor for the two newcomers.
