Spengler tests the BMW iFE.18 in Calafat

Canadian driver Bruno Spengler took the wheel of the BMW iFE.18 to complete the car’s test in Calafat, Spain. The 34 year-old had previously tested the Andretti ATEC-03 during the Marrakesh Rookie Test last January.

Season 5 will see German giant BMW entering the FIA Formula E Championship, as an official manufacturer. To prepare ahead of a season which features a new car, the marque had its factory driver Bruno Spengler testing the Gen 2 machine.

The 2012 DTM champion had already taken part in January’s Marrakesh Rookie Test, driving for MS&AD Andretti.

“The test with the BMW iFE.18 was a very positive one. We spent a lot of time on track. When we did come across any issues, they were solved relatively quickly. In a project as new as this one, the initial tests are primarily about gaining experience”, commented the Canadian.

“We did that and completed the majority of our test programme. For me, as a driver, it is very special to be involved here from the word go. Working on the development of a new car is a unique task”, he added.

As an official manufacturer, the car was solely developed by BMW. The Munich-based marque has been involved in the fully-electric championship since the series started, as the there are two cars belonging to the BMWi line -the Safety and Medical cars.

In terms of racing, BMW personnel has been working with the Andretti team since Season 3. The team currently has BMW factory drivers Antonio Felix da Costa and Tom Blomqvist, both former teammates of Spengler in DTM.
