Di Grassi leads the way in eventful FP1 session

Lucas di Grassi topped the standings on an eventful FP1 session in the streets of Brooklyn.

The session started off eventfully, as an incident between Nick Heidfeld and Daniel Abt led to both drivers to hit the wall and block the narrow corner. This caused a total of eight cars to be stranded in that section of the track, and the deployment of red flags.

When the action restarted, both Jaguar Racing drivers took the lead of the session, with Nelson Piquet Jr. sitting ahead of Mitch Evans.

NIO’s Oliver Turvey overtook them on the standings, but his dominance was short-lived, as Jose Maria Lopez made contact with a kerb which ended up damaging his rear right suspension, causing the Argentinian to stop on track.

The second red flag period extended for over fifteen minutes, as Lopez’s car was stranded on a tricky position to be removed from the track and taken into Dragon’s garage.

Interviewed by Formula E’s Nicki Shields, Team Owner Jay Penske expressed the team had made a good step forward in Zuerich, but Lopez’s crash early into race day was a downside for the American team.

Once the green flags were waved again, Buemi took the lead of the session immediately. The top spot on the standings was disputed by Buemi and di Grassi, with the leader changing several times since the session was resumed.

Race control added more time to the session, for the time lost during the second red flag period.

With less than a minute left, Maro Engel crashed. The sound of his car hitting the barriers was heard on the broadcast, in what seemed to be a strong crash. However, the German managed to be back in action, with just some damage on the car’s nose.

The eventful session saw di Grassi top the standings, followed by Buemi and Evans. Championship leader Jean Eric Vergne finished in P4, whereas title contender Sam Bird finished in P6, just behind Vergne and Abt.
