D’Ambrosio quickest in disrupted Sunday practice session

Jerome d’Ambrosio was in the right place at the right time for Mahindra Racing, as he set the fastest lap time in the only Sunday practice session ahead of today’s season finale in New York.

In a heavily disrupted session, the Belgian driver was the only one who had set a lap time with the full 250kw prior to the session getting called.

There had already been a lengthy delay to make repairs to a manhole cover Turn 14 but an accident for Gary Paffett was what led to the early end.

The HWA driver had locked up on the way into Turn 11 and understeered into the barrier on the outside.

Race Director Scott Elkins then made the decision to end it early so further repairs could be carried out at turn 14.

Behind d’Ambrosio were Robin Frijns for Envision Virgin Racing and BMW i Andretti Motorsport’s Alexander Sims, while Daniel Abt was fourth quickest for Audi Sport Abt Schaeffler.

Oliver Rowland, Jean-Eric Vergne and Stoffel Vandoorne for Nissan e.dams, DS Techeetah and HWA respectively made it seven different teams in the top seven places.

Lucas di Grassi was eighth in the second of the Audi’s ahead of Jaguar’s Alex Lynn, who will have a 10 place grid penalty due to a motor change and the top 10 was rounded out by Sebastien Buemi in the other Nissan.

Antonio Felix da Costa was eleventh in the other BMW ahead of Sam Bird in the second of the Envision Virgin Racing entries and Venturi’s Felipe Massa.

Mitch Evans was fourteenth fastest for Jaguar ahead of the Dragon pairing of Maximilian Guenther and Jose Maria Lopez.

Tom Dillmann was seventeenth quickest for NIO in front of DS Techeetah’s Andre Lotterer, Venturi’s Edoardo Mortara and Paffett rounded out the top 20.

The field was rounded out by NIO’s Oliver Turvey and Pascal Wehrlein in the other Mahindra.

Qualifying gets underway at 11:45 local time.
