Berthon victorious as Dubourg is crowned champion

Nathaneal Berthon wins the final round of the 2020-21 Andros eTrophy championship as Jean-Baptiste Dubourg is officially crowned champion.

Dubourg couldn’t make it a clean sweep of victories at Val Thorens, but did come home second after an eventful final race of the season.

Poor visibility due to snow provided another challenge going into the Super Final.

Starting from pole, Berthon got the jump on Dubourg and began to pull away. It didn’t take long for Dubourg to jump back onto his tail but he couldn’t find a way through. The pair were seperated by less than a second as they took the chequered flag.

It wouldn’t be enough to upset Dubourg’s dominant campaign, as the Renault driver ends the season with a 52 points gap to Aurelien Panis in second and 56 to Berthon.

Panis started from fifth on the grid but wouldn’t stay that way for long. Nico Prost dived past third placed Julien Febreau, putting both drivers off line and allowing Panis to come through. Panis made contact with Prost as he passed, sending the Renault driver into the snow bank and out of the race.

Panis left Febreau to battle with Enzo Ide to finish a comfortable P3.

Febreau and Ide made contact several times over the course of the race, Ide losing a lot of bodywork in the process. On the final lap Febreau came to a stop, allowing Ide to come through and take P4.

In the second final Yann Ehrlacher held off Benjamin Riviere to take the win.

On the opening lap Riviere appeared to have trouble keeping to the racing line, but it wasn’t long before he was pushing Ehrlacher to try to find a way through. Olivier Pernaut and Sebastien Loeb joined the pair to make it a four way fight.

In the closing stages of the race, Riviere lined up a move down the inside of Ehrlacher. The move didn’t work but the ripple effect as everyone slowed to take a corner left Loeb briefly stopped on track and allowed Christophe Ferrier and Franck Lagorce to come through.

A few corners later, Pernaut also came to a stop on track.

Ehrlacher took the victory ahead of Riviere and Ferrier, though it wouldn’t be enough to retain third in the championship standings.
