Just Electric

Back in the Roman roads: what’s in store for the Rome E-Prix?

Formula E is back on European soil this weekend. With a double header on the streets of Rome, the championship action continues.

Last year’s Rome E-Prix had to be called off to the COVID-19 pandemic but was back on the calendar when the Season 7 calendar was revealed. The series later revealed there would be a change in the circuit layout for this year’s edition, then earlier this year revealed the Italian capital would host a double-header.

The first two rounds of the championship were no short of action and drama. Nyck De Vries got his maiden win in the season opener in Diriyah, performing a lights-to-flag masterclass in the first ever night race in Formula E history.

But the Mercedes driver was not the only one to put on a show, as Edoardo Mortara made a stunning two-car pass climbed up to the second place, which, despite still being in the early stages, is likely to become a strong candidate for overtake of the season.

The second race was an eventful one. It had to be abruptly cut short, as a multi-car incident threw Alex Lynn’s Mahindra car upside down, ultimately hitting the barriers. The British driver came out unharmed. Bird, who was leading when the accident took place, took the win.

And now we are back in Rome.

De Vries is currently leading the championship, and will surely be a strong contender to take the win in the Italian capital. His Mercedes teammate Stoffel Vandoorne is also one to watch, having been a good qualifier and performer in his Formula E career.

The Jaguar Racing team has already gotten his first win of the season, and the Sam Bird-Mitch Evans pair is one of the strongest on the grid, having collected an important number of points in the first two rounds of the fully-electric championship.

If we have learnt something over the seasons is that Jean-Eric Vergne and Antonio da Costa are always hungry for the win. The Techeetah team is the only outfit to line up two series champions, and both of them will fight until the last second to be in the highest place on the standings.

In Diriyah, the Dragons did a great job and took home important points. With Sergio Sette Camara and Nico Mueller currently sitting ninth and eleventh in the Drivers’ Championship respectively, they are two to keep an eye on this weekend. Oliver Turvey was able to score good points too, and might be up for another surprise.

Formula E is known for its nail-bitting performances and unexpected results. The Rome E-Prix has everything set to be yet another memorable race.
