Wehrlein tops disrupted FP3 session

Pascal Wehrlein topped an action-packed third practice session that was disrupted by a red flag before ten minutes were added to the session to compensate for lost running.

The Porsche driver set a lap time of 1:07.215 in the last seconds of the session to move up on top of the standings.

The session was red flagged with 13 minutes to go, as Envision’s Nick Cassidy hit the wall at Turn 11, damaging his Audi-powered car. Though the Kiwi informed his team on the radio that there was no chassis damage, both the front and rear of his car sustained damages from the hit.

At the time the red flags were deployed, Venturi’s Edoardo Mortara was leading the session.

Race Control announced that FP1 would be extended for ten more minutes.

Several drivers set faster times during the extra time, but it would ultimately be Wehrlein who topped the standings. Behind him came Jean-Eric Vergne, who had briefly been at the lead in the early stages of the session. In third position came Oliver Rowland.

Mortara finished in fourth position, while Antonio Felix da Costa completed the top five.

Yesterday’s winner Nyck de Vries finished the session in the eighth position, while teammate and yesterday’s poleman Stoffel Vandoorne did not make it within the top ten, finishing 13th.
