Vergne Equals Record With Pole in Rome

Jean-Eric Vergne secured a record-equalling pole position for the Rome E-Prix.

Vergne secured pole position with a 1:38.268 to beat Andretti’s Jake Dennis by 0.221 seconds; the British driver having previously set the fastest lap of the weekend in the semi-finals.

The pole position for Vergne sees him equal Sebastien Buemi’s record for most pole positions in Formula E with 14 and sees him move level on points in the championship with Robin Frijns, Frijns being ahead on countback.

Vergne had only just made through in his group, setting the fourth quickest time and arguably, could have been knocked out by Sergio Sette Camara had the Brazillian driver not stuck his Dragon into the wall at Turn 12 after a lock-up.

Vergne made it into the final after beating Robin Frijns, the fastest driver in the opening qualifying group after the Dutchman lost the back end of the car in the last couple of corners.

Vergne then beat Lotterer in the first semi-final, lotterer struggling with his tyres somewhat causing him to lose time, and the colour from the camera briefly after the German driver clattered the kerbs at Turns 12 and 13. Lotterer had previously beaten Stoffel Vandoorne in their duel.

Dennis’ route to the final was via Pascal Wehrlein in the duels before setting the first sub-38 of the weekend in the semi-final against Mitch Evans, with a 1:37.997. Evans had previously beaten his teammate Sam Bird in their respective duel.

Nyck de Vries set the fifth-fastest time in the first qualifying group. However, he’ll be starting in 13th following his three-place grid penalty after a collision in the race. The top ten was therefore rounded out by Antonio Felix da Costa and Sette Camara.
