Bethonie WaringEdoardo Mortara claimed his maiden pole position after a controversial qualifying session in Berlin.
The Venturi driver beat Mahindra’s Alexander Sims in the final duel, despite a wide moment on his flying lap.
His 1m06.093s time was his worst lap of the duel stages, but enough to put him ahead of Sims by 0.137s.
Mortara finished third in the group stages, behind Pascal Wehrlein and Stoffel Vandoorne. He went head to head with Andre Lotterer in the quarter finals, beating the Porsche driver by just 0.008s.
The semi finals were almost as close, with Mortara beating Antonio Felix Da Costa by 0.08s.
Da Costa’ s team-mate Jean-Eric Vergne was also knocked out in the group stages.
Alexander Sims had been fifth when the chequered flag fell at the end of the second group, but was promoted into the top four when Sebastien Buemi had his lap time removed for not spending enough time in the pits during the first phase of the session.
Sims beat Wehrlein in the quarter final and went head to head with Vergne.
The two drivers set the exact same lap time, a 1m06.050s. Due to the fact he went out first, Sims was awarded the victory and progressed to the finals.
Vergne’s lap would only be enough for fourth and he starts behind team-mate Antonio Felix Da Costa.
Lotterer was the quickest of those knocked out in the quarter finals and lines up sixth, ahead of Wehrlein, Sergio Setta Camara and Vandoorne.
Despite the pit infringement, Buemi’s next fastest time was enough for ninth. Mitch Evans completes the top 10. Robin Frijns, who currently lies fourth in the championship standings, could only manage P20 in a difficult session for the Envision Racing team.
