RXR wins in Sardinia despite Sainz shunt

Rosberg X Racing completes a perfect “weekend” with victory in the Island X-Prix final despite a collision with the Acciona Sainz squad.

Johan Kristoffersson and Carlos Sainz came together while battling towards the start of the opening lap. The Sainz car rolled and RXR was left with heavy damage but managed to continue.

After a red flag to clear Sainz, who was able to walk away from the car but taken to hospital for precautionary checks, Sara Price chased after Mikaela Ahlin-Kottulinsky but couldn’t take victory away from RXR.

It was Sainz who got the best start off the line and was leading early on before the collision with Kristoffersson. Behind them, Kyle LeDuc led Timo Scheider and Kevin Hansen.

LeDuc tried to stick close to Kristoffersson, and they were separated by just under five seconds when they entered the switch zone.

Behind them, Hansen suffered a spin, giving Scheider some breathing room in third.

The delay caused by the red flag allowed RXR to complete some minor repairs while they waited for racing to resume. Kristoffersson and a technician took to the car with tape, though much of the front bodywork was missing.

The cars were restarted with the gaps they entered the switch zone with and Price left just under five seconds after Ahlin-Kottulinsky. She couldn’t close in on the RXR car, though, and finished 10.36s back.

Tamara Molinaro completed a faultless lap to take Xite’s first podium finish in the championship. She maintained a gap of just over 11 seconds to Hedda Hosas in P4.

Victory allows RXR to extend its lead at the top of the championship standings. Chip Ganassi Racing move up to P2 in the championship standings.
