He made two race starts for Toyota in 2009 and moved to Sauber for 2010 after the Japanese outfit withdrew from F1. Three seasons at Sauber followed before he was replaced at the Swiss outfit and switched, for one season, to AF Corse in the World Endurance Championship.
Kobayashi secured a return to F1 with the now-defunct Caterham team for one season before moving to Super Formula. He also competes in the World Endurance Championship with Toyota in LMP1.
