Hong Kong ePrix: what has been said

The first two rounds of Season 4 have just passed by, and we can all agree that the season opener had everything we wanted to see: brilliant drives, joy, laughs, drama; but above all, Formula E! Just Electric sums up how the protagonists saw this weekend through social media.

Following last season’s success, the Hong Kong ePrix was featured again in the calendar as the season opener. The focus during the weekend was merely what was going on in Asian soil during the weekend; and as the Class of Season 4 was introduced, we could not wait until race day came around.

The two Free Practice Sessions saw different winners at the top of the standings. FP1 leader was Sébastien Buemi, aiming to start another Formula E season with the right foot. After coming first, both him and his team were proud of the job done.

Jaguar Racing’s Mitch Evans topped FP2, with an incredible pace. The Kiwi was starting to display his abilities behind the wheel on a Jaguar car that looks to be one of the most potential ones on the grid.

Qualifying was filled with exciting and nerve-wracking moments. From Nico Prost kissing the wall and causing red flags, to Jean-Éric Vergne qualifying in a never seen before way; any fan of the series will agree that the qualifying session for Race 1 is already one of the most iconic moments of the season.

As red lights went out, we witnessed the start of another exciting season. The race was red flagged after a couple of laps, but as soon as action was restarted, we saw some incredible moves that landed in an astonishing win by DS Virgin Racing’s Sam Bird.

The following day, Race 2 took place in the streets of Hong Kong. Sébastien Buemi topped the only Free Practice Session, and Qualifying saw Felix Rosenqvist achieve his fourth Formula E career pole.

The race was one of the most hard-fought and dramatic Formula E races we have seen to date. It had to be started with the cars behind the safety cars, as the lights did not work. Once green flags were waved, Felix Rosenqvist spun in Turn 1, and Venturi’s Edoardo Mortara took advantage to lead the race with a brilliant pace. The Swiss-born Italian was two laps from his first victory in the series, when he spun and dropped to P3, with Daniel Abt finishing in P1, and conquering his first ever victory in Formula E.

However, things did not end there. Shortly after the race finished, it was announced that Abt had been disqualified, and Rosenqvist inherited the win. Mortara, who could not hide his disappointment when the race finished, moved up to P2, and Jaguar Racing got its first podium finish, as Mitch Evans was promoted to third.

If there is anything that should be highlighted about this first race, is the immense level of sportsmanship the Formula E stars have, which not only makes them heroes on track, but also when they are no longer competing.

Thanks #formulae #fe. Thanks #hongkong you were awesome to me. I hope to have many more weekends like this one ???? #Venturi #edo #adlap

Who would have thought that the trophy exchange between teams would take place in the airport? Venturi captured the moment on a hilarious picture, and Jaguar Racing Team Director James Barclay told he received the trophy while on his way home.
