Virgin announces Eriksson for Marrakesh test

BMW racer Joel Eriksson will test with DS Virgin in Formula E’s first rookie test.

Eriksson, who is set to compete in DTM with the German Manufacturer this year, has already completed simulator sessions with the team ahead of his FE debut.

“We’re delighted to have Joel testing for us in the Formula E rookie test,” said team principal Alex Tai.

“DS virgin Racing is passionate about nurturing new talent and Joel is one of the most up-and-coming drivers on the scene right now.

“We’re looking forward to seeing what he can do in our race-winning machinery.”

Director at DS Performance Xavier Mestelan Pinon added: “When Joel came in for his simulator session at DS Performance’s HQ, we were impressed with his work rate and how quickly he got up to speed.”

Eriksson only made his car racing debut in 2014, racing in the ADAC Formel Masters. So far, his racing CV boasts second in the 2015 German F4 championship, a Masters of Formula 3 victory in 2016, and second in the 2017 European F3 championship.

“Formula E has a wealth of very talented drivers so it’s great to be experiencing this first-hand and getting my first taste of electric racing,” he said.

“DS Virgin Racing are a proven race-winning team so I’m looking forward to getting behind the wheel.”

Virgin are yet to announce who will be running alongside Eriksson during the rookie test, which will take place the day after the Marrakesh ePrix.

Renault, Venturi, and NIO also have drivers to announce before the test.
