DS Virgin Racing driver Sam Bird topped the first non-qualifying practice of the Santiago ePrix, as the session was finished earlier than expected due to red flags displayed on track.
Renault e.dams and DS Virgin showed strong pace at the start of the session as Buemi, Bird, and Lynn topped the times for several minutes.
Many drivers were able to top the standings afterwards. Felix Rosenqvist, Lucas di Grassi, and Daniel Abt were able to maintain that lead for several minutes.
Mahindra Racing’s Swede stopped on track, causing him to take his car back to the pits for it to be repaired. Rosenqvist was not the only one to struggle in the session, as Luca Filippi stopped on track several times.
Halfway through the session, Sébastien Buemi touched the wall, damaging his right-rear suspension. The Season 2 champion had to take his car back to the garage to be repaired.
As the session went on, Lucas di Grassi was able to be back on top of the standings. Mortara and López showcased brilliant drives and were able to make it to the top three.
With less than ten minutes to go, TECHEETAH’s Jean Eric Vergne was able to go P1, followed by Mitch Evans, who remained within the top 10 all throughout the session.
At the end of FP1, Maro Engel crashed into a barrier, causing red flags to be displayed. Race direction decided to finish the session in that moment.
Sam Bird was P1 as the session was finished, followed by Felix Rosenqvist – who was able to go out on track again after his car was repaired – with Jean Eric Vergne completing the top three.
