A plot twist in the story: Abt wins Mexico City ePrix

In a race full of surprises, Daniel Abt took victory, followed by Oliver Turvey clinching his first ever podium in the series. Poleman Rosenqvist had to retire on a race to forget for Mahindra Racing.

As the red lights went out, some drivers saw the chance to move up some places. Daniel Abt overtook Antonio Felix da Costa, moving up to P4; whereas teammate di Grassi, who started at the back of the grid, was able to climb up several places.

Rosenqvist had a good start, with an average 0.5 second gap to Oliver Turvey in the first five laps of the race. Buemi, who tried to overtake NIO’s Oliver Turvey, failed to do so in the early stages of the race.

Early on, a battle on track between Vergne and Piquet Jr., saw the latter trying to overtake the Frenchman in several occasions. Vergne defended his position, almost colliding with the Brazilian driver.

Yellow flags were displayed on track, as Felix Rosenqvist’s car stopped on track, costing the Swede to quickly reset the car. Oliver Turvey inherited the lead of the race. The Brit had started on Pole Position this race last year. After stopping on track, Rosenqvist dropped to P20.

Turvey’s early lead was a strong one, as he had a 3.5 seconds gap to Sébastien Buemi, who kept defending himself from Abt’s constant attack for P2.

Abt was able to overtake Buemi in lap 21, quickly shortening the gap to the NIO driver on the front.

Rosenqvist was the first driver to swap cars, after the issues that his first car suffered. The Swede exited the pits in P20.

In the midfield, Nico Prost was able to climb up to P11, whereas López could make it to the Top 10 before the mandatory car swap.

Both Dragon drivers collided with each other when entering the pits. This collision could have happened again when López and d’Ambrosio exited their garages, but it was avoided.

Daniel Abt positioned himself in P1, after exiting the pitlane first. Turvey came out in P2, whilst Vergne exited the pitlane ahead of Buemi. Nonetheless, the Swiss was able to get the position back, as he overtook TECHEETAH’s Jean-Éric Vergne.

An incident in the mandatory car swap, which left a mechanic hit in one of his legs, led to Lotterer being under investigation for unsafe pitstop release.

A collision between López and di Grassi, caused the Brazilian to spin and drop back some positions in the standings. Jérôme d’Ambrosio was able to move up two places after this incident.

Piquet Jr. was able to finally overtake Vergne. At the same time, Edoardo Mortara was able to enter the Top 10, after overtaking Sam Bird. The Brit dropped back several positions.

Rosenqvist retired from the race in lap 37, after his teammate did the same a few laps earlier. A weekend to forget for Mahindra Racing, despite scoring points with Rosenqvist’s Pole Position.

Prost dropped back to P18, after a collision with DS Virgin Racing’s Sam Bird. As a result, the Frenchman had to take his car to the pits. The Renault e.dams driver was later put under investigation for cutting the chicane.

Nelson Piquet Jr. had a small gap to Sébastien Buemi, trying to pass the Swiss aimig to score his first podium of the season.

Nico Prost had to retire after his collision with Bird. This was the third retirement from the race, along with both Mahindra’s.

Lucas di Grassi, who started the race at the back of the grid, climbed up to P10.

With just two laps to go, Sébastien Buemi put on a massive effort to pass Oliver Turvey who strongly defended his position.

Daniel Abt saw the chequered flag first as he came across the finish line in P1. It was all smiles in the Audi garage; and also, in the NIO one. Oliver Turvey was able to score his first ever Formula E podium, ending his bad luck streak. The Brit scored highly valuable points for him and the team.

Sébastien Buemi could not overtake Turvey, finishing in P3. Jaguar’s Nelson Piquet Jr. saw the chequered flag from P4, whereas Vergne extended his championship lead, finishing in P5.

Mitch Evans had another point-scoring weekend, finishing in P6. The same happened to Andretti’s da Costa, who finished seventh. Venturi got back to the points, as Edoardo Mortara successfully finished in P8.

Lucas di Grassi obtained his first points of the season, finishing in P9 after doing a hard job going from the bottom of the standings. The Brazilian also picked up the extra point for the fastest lap. Completing the Top 10 was Alex Lynn, who had also been penalised before the race.

Both Dragon drivers finished out of the points, with d’Ambrosio in P11 and López in P12. Lotterer, who finished the race still under investigation, finished 13th.

Filippi, Blomqvist, Engel, and Bird could not score points. Both Mahindras and Renault e.dams’ Nico Prost had to retire from the Mexico City ePrix.

With both Audi drivers now having scored points in the season, the German squad looks forward to keep improving this performance, aiming to continue climbing in the Teams’ Standings.
