di Grassi flies in Punta to score season’s first Pole Position

Lucas di Grassi is provisionally on pole position for the CBMM Niobium Punta Del Este ePrix in a qualifying session which was interrupted by multiple incidents.

The Audi Sport Abt Schaefler driver, Second placed Alex Lynn, for DS Virgin and fourth fastest driver, NIO’s Oliver Turvey are all under investigation for a breach of track limits at the Turn 14-15 chicane.

The three drivers all hit the bollard placed at the chicane of Turns 14 and 15 to try and stop the drivers form straight-lining the chicane.

Mitch Evans Qualified third despite brushing the wall at the exit of Turn 9 and fifth fastest was Jean-Eric Vergne in the fastest of the Techeetah’s with the Frenchman’s frustration clear on the radio.

Daniel Abt was unlucky to miss out on a place in Super Pole but still qualified sixth in the second Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler car with Sebastien Buemi qualifying seventh in the highest placed of the two Renault e.dams entries.

Andre Lotterer put together a decent lap to go eighth fastest and in ninth, was Maro Engel in the first of the Venturi’s. Sam Bird rounded out the top 10 in the second DS Virgin Racing entry but admitted that he was disappointed with his lap.

Jose Maria Lopez was eleventh with team-mate Jerome D’Ambrosio twelfth for Dragon Racing and thirteenth was all Antonio Felix da Costa could manage in the fastest of the Andretti’s.

Fourteenth was Felix Rosenqvist in the fastest of the Mahindra’s despite brushing the wall at Turn 9 with NIO’s Luca Filippi in fifteenth.

Edoardo Mortara was sixteenth for Venturi, his lap having been compromised by having to do a second 200kw lap as his first was interrupted by the red flag for Nelson Piquet’s crash.

Seventeenth was Andretti’s Tom Blomqvist, who damaged his steering at the final complex of corners at the end of the lap.

Nick Heidfeld was eighteenth after going a little bit too quickly into Turn 17 and under-steering into the barrier.

Nineteenth was Nelson Piquet in the second of the Panasonic Jaguar Racing entries after making a mistake at the chicane of turns 10 and 11 with the sausage kerb on the inside of Turn 11 playing a part in the incident.

The Brazilian looking like he was going to be a contender for a place in Super Pole as his split times were looking good prior to the accident.

Nico Prost was 20th after a big off at the chicane of Turns 14 and 15. The replays showed that he may have clipped the wall on the inside when he was turning into the first part of the chicane and the damage to the car sent him into the wall on the outside of the second part at speed.
