Bird: Improving qualifying is key to better results

DS Virgin Racing driver Sam Bird scored another podium finish in the Punta del Este ePrix after starting from P9, but reckons he needs to improve his qualifying times.

After a disappointing race in Mexico City, with no points in the bag, Sam Bird was able to fight back in Punta del Este, seeing the chequered flag from P3.

The Brit, who started in P9, showed a strong pace during the race, which allowed him move up several places and obtain a podium finish.

In dialogue with Just Electric, Bird admitted that qualifying is an aspect he needs to improve in order to be up fighting for wins.

“We need to qualify better, that was weak from me today. it wasn’t my best. You know, I’ve done some good qualies before, and in this race it was one of the lowest ones.

“It was a poor lap, just nothing super about it; so I need to improve that, raise my game again, get back into the Super Pole, do the job we know we can do, and then we can race at the front”.

In the two previous runnings of the Punta del Este ePrix, Bird retired from the race. The ‘third time lucky’ phrase is commonly used in cases like this one; but Bird himself says he does not believe it’s a matter of luck.

“You can call it third-time lucky, you can call it redemption, you can call it whatever you want. It was a strong race. I don’t believe in luck. You make your own luck and today we were just strong”.

Next month, Formula E heads to Europe to kick off the European leg in the streets of Rome. The DS Virgin Racing driver is aware that going into Rome with a result like this one will be key. “We need to take the momentum for another good result in Rome”.
