Bueno claims Sanya pole in Jaguar I-Pace

Jaguar Brazil Racing’s Caca Bueno qualified on Pole Position for the Jaguar I-Pace eTrophy race in Sanya.

Qualifying was closely contested with the top four drivers separated by less than a tenth of a second.

The session started in a complete contrast to the previous round in Hong Kong, with track temperatures of 31°C and 88% humidity, which made the conditions inside the Jaguar I-Pace’s difficult.

In the first couple of minutes, championship leader Bryan Sellers (RLL Racing), Simon Evans (Team Asia New Zealand) and Caca Bueno set the early pace, with the latter topping the timesheets with a 1m27.373s.

Bueno’s Jaguar Brazil Racing team-mate, Sergio Jimenez, moved into second shortly after but hit the wall on the exit of Turn 5.

This caused one of the advertising hoardings to fall off and subsequently brought out the red flag.

The loose banner was collected by Sellers on the way back to the pits, who had also picked up a tyre puncture.

When the action resumed, the drivers took a while to get up to speed again.

With just over ten minutes left on the clock, Katherine Legge (RLL Racing) stopped at the exit of Turn 6, with the front left tyre missing from the rim of her Jaguar I-Pace and would eventually end the session in eighth place.

In the final minutes, several drivers threaten to improve.

Despite setting the fastest middle sector of the session during his final run, Evans missed out on Pole position to Bueno by one hundredth of a second.

Jimenez and Sellers was not too far behind and will start on the second row, with Stefan Rzadzinski fifth for TWR Techeetah.

Saudi Racing’s Bandar Alesayi was the fastest Pro-Am driver in sixth, ahead of Yaqi Zhang (Jaguar China Racing) and Legge.

Alesayi’s team-mate Ahmed Bin Khanen was seven and half tenths of Bueno’s pole time in ninth, ahead of Celia Martin (Viessmann Team Germany), with Tao Wang (Jaguar China Racing) on row six with guest driver David Cheng.
