Bethonie WaringAndre Lotterer becomes the seventh driver to take pole from seven races, despite a mistake on his flying lap in the Super Pole.
The Techeetah driver was fastest in the group stages of qualifying, but it looked as if he might drop down the order when it began to rain at the start of the Super Pole shootout.
But the rain cleared as Mitch Evans completed his fastest lap, meaning Lotterer had the best conditions in the final stages of qualifying.
Despite a mistake that briefly caused premature celebrations in the Jaguar garage, Lotterer completed his lap in 1m32.123s to put him just 0.360s ahead of Evans.
Jose Maria Lopez took third, ahead of Stoffel Vandoorne, Maximillian Guenther, and Sebastien Buemi, meaning the order after Super Pole is the same as that after qualifying. Both Guenther and Buemi were caught out by slippery conditions on their out laps, but wouldn’t repeat the mistake on their flying runs.
The top five in the championship were out in the first qualifying group, putting the title contenders at a disadvantage. Championship leader Antonio Felix Da Costa was the quickest of the group but dropped back to 13th by the time the rest of the field had qualified.
The second half of qualifying was delayed as Alexander Sims in the third qualifying group stopped on track after a loss of power, bringing out the red flags. Everyone had already passed Sims when the red flag was thrown, but yellow flags in the first sector ruined most of the group’s lap times. Everyone was granted a second lap, which would put Evans and Buemi into the Super Pole shoot out.
Eduardo Mortara lines up seventh on the grid, ahead of Robin Frijns and Alex Lynn, who makes his return to Formula E for Jaguar, replacing Nelson Piquet Jnr.
Pascal Wehrlein rounds out the top 10.
