Lotterer claims Porsche’s maiden Formula E pole

Andre Lotterer claims Porsche’s first Formula E pole position as he tops qualifying for the Mexico E-Prix.

Lotterer set a lap time of 1m07.922s to go just 0.063s quicker than Mitch Evans in the Super Pole shoot out, denying the Jaguar driver back-to-back pole position.

Pascal Wehrlein ended the session third quickest, but a 40-place grid penalty for a gearbox change means he will start from the back of the grid. As he cannot complete his full penalty, the remainder will be converted to a drive-through penalty during the race while team-mate Jerome D’Ambrosio, who qualified P14 and received the same 40-place grid penalty, will have a stop-go penalty added to his race.

Nyck de Vries qualified fourth but will start third, ahead of Sebastien Buemi and Sam Bird, who made it through to the Super Pole shoot out despite qualifying in the first group.

Robin Frijns narrowly missed out on a place in the Super Pole, qualifying seventh ahead of Nico Mueller and Jean-Eric Vergne, who has had a problem with his brakes throughout the weekend. The team worked to resolve the issue before qualifying, but the problem arose again, putting him on the backfoot.

He lines up just ahead of team-mate Antonio Felix Da Costa and Stoffel Vandoorne.

The only incident during the session came in the final group when NIO driver Oliver Turvey came to a stop on track. He was able to get going again before yellow flags disrupted anybody’s lap, but was unable to set a competitive lap time and will start behind team-mate Ma Qinghua.

Daniel Abt was released from hospital following his crash in free practice one. The team has rebuilt his Audi, which needed a new tub due to the force of the incident, but it’s unknown whether he will take part in the race.

Edoardo Mortara and Oliver Rowland will start 11th and 12th after Wehrlein’s penalty, ahead of Brendon Hartley, Neel Jani and Lucas Di Grassi.

Maximilian Guenther takes 18th, followed by James Calado, Alexander Sims, and Felipe Massa.
