Extreme E becomes the first gender equal racing series

After becoming the first series to take electric racing off-road, Extreme E is now pioneering in gender equality.

All teams will line up men and women. They will switch their roles as driver and co-pilot in the two laps the race is composed of. In addition, “It’s up to the teams to determine driver and co-driver to best suit their strategy”, the series has commented in an official press release.

In such a male-dominated environment like motorsports, Extreme E’s initiative is ground-breaking in terms of bringing equality to the racing scene, and in the series’ own words “The only differentiators will be raw talent and ability”.

Michele Mouton, who presides the FIA Women in Motorsport Commission, has highlighted the equal conditions in which men and women will partake in the series: “This is a great opportunity for women and men to team up, compete together and against each other with the same material”.

Alejandro Agag, founder and CEO of Extreme E, mentioned how this initiative aims to raise awareness of equality in motorsports: “We are striving for equality, and this sporting format is the truest reflection of that goal. Everybody will race together and the most effective combination of drivers, team, engineer and car will rise to the top”.
