Just Electric

The Penalty Mambo

A number of disqualifications and penalties took place after today’s first round of the Berlin E-Prix.

Just as the chequered flag was waved, a number of penalties were issued to drivers, which modified the final results of the first round of the special season finale in Berlin.

BMW’s Maximilian Guenther got disqualified for overpassing the maximum of 45 kWh of energy allowed. The young German had finished the race in P8, collecting four points, having started the race outside of the Top 10.

Edoardo Mortara got given a 18-second penalty, which puts him in P17 after crossing the finish line in P12. It was not a successful day in the office for both Venturi drivers, as Felipe Massa went home with no points in the bag either after retiring from a collision suffered halfway through the race.

Daniel Abt, on his first race for NIO, got penalised with a five-second penalty for not slowing down to the indicated FCY speed of 50 km/h in the five seconds required to do so. The German finished at the bottom of the standings in the final classification.

The second disqualification of the day was Sette Camara’s. The Brazilian debutant infringed the same rule as Guenther, and costing him to be disqualified from his very first race in the fully-electric championship. Luck was not on his side, as he also got given a drive through penalty due to his car “started from an incorrect starting position”, as the document issued by FIA states.

If we have learnt something from past races held at Tempelhof, is that Berlin proves to be an unforgiving track when it comes to penalties and the slightest mistake can turn the tables when it comes to the final results.
