Extreme E granted FIA International Series status

Extreme E has received approval from the World Motorsport Council to be recognised as an FIA International Series.

The championship is set to get underway in January 2021, with two of the eight teams having already confirmed their compete line-ups.

Earlier regulations stated that only series running on motor racing circuits – including temporary circuit – would be accepted as International Series. Running on closed roads, as will be the case in Extreme E events, would make the series ineligible for the International Series status.

Extreme E was granted a special waiver by the WMSC to allow it to use electric prototypes powered Cross Country vehicles on closed road courses.

“All of us at Extreme E are delighted to have this seal of approval and be officially classified as an FIA International Series,” said championship CEO Alejandro Agag. “We’ve been working hard towards this goal and the speed of recognition by the FIA gives us all a great confidence boost as we prepare to start our first season in 2021.

“This certification confirms that Extreme E will operate to FIA international standards and we will also benefit greatly from the valuable input of the FIA and the ACM (Auto Club de Monaco). The FIA’s decades of sporting and technical expertise will be a great addition as we get started on this exciting new sporting journey together.”

The WMSC also came to decisions regarding rule tweets for the 2020-21 Formula E season.

As well as limiting spare parts and data acquisition tools, it has been confirmed qualifying will be cut to just four minutes per group.

Each group had previously been given six minutes to set a flying lap in the first part of qualifying, with the top six progressing to the Super Pole shootout.

The change is unlikely to make much difference, as most of the field opt to head on track as late as possible and the field rarely made use of the full six minutes.
