Lynn quickest in second day of testing, Mueller ‘wins’ dummy race

Mahindra’s Alex Lynn topped the order in the second day of preseason testing in Valencia.

After mixed conditions on Saturday and a number of offs disrupting running, the 24 car field got a much cleaner day of testing over the two sessions.

Lynn’s quickest time, a 1m11.941s, came in the closing stages of the afternoon session, and beat Antonio Felix da Costa’s morning time by just 0.007s.

The majority of the field set their quickest time in the morning session. Behind Da Costa, Maximillian Gunther put in a 1m12.049s to end the session second quickest and third by the end of the day.

Oliver Rowland and Jean-Eric Vergne also set their best time in the morning practice, slotting in fourth and fifth quickest overall.

Jake Dennis, sixth quickest overall, improved in the afternoon session, as did Sam Bird and Edoardo Mortara, who took seventh and eighth.

Robin Frijns and Lucas Di Grassi rounded out the top 10.

Only one red flag period disrupted running. Action was haulted roughly 45 minutes before the lunchbreak due to an issue with the kerb at turn six. A number of drivers had minor offs during the day, but all were able to make it back to the pits under their own power.

Day two of testing also featured a dummy race, in which the field went head to head for the first time since the Berlin sextuple in August. However, the 45-minute race was largely unstructured and teams could choose whether or not they would complete the whole race.

Only a handful of drivers completed the full 31 laps, with Nico Muller taking the chequered flag first.

Nissan duo Oliver Rowland and Sebastien Buemi set the pace for most of the dummy race, before coming into the pits seven laps before the end.
