Sainz and Sanz announced for QEV Extreme E entry

Two-time world rally champion Carlos Sainz will partner motorbike racer Laia Sanz in the QEV Technologies entry for Extreme E’s inaugural season.

The team, now known as Acciona Sainz XE Team, will work with Extreme E Technical Partner QEV, who announced their intentions to run a team in the championship in March.

Sainz has been a permanent figure in international rally since the 1980s, and recently took his third Dakar Rally victory in the 2020 iteration of the race.

Team-mate Sanz has multiple successes on two wheels, including a best-ever finish for a female ride at Dakar when she finished ninth overall in 2015.

She has also made multiple guest appearances in endurance races on four wheels, most recently in the SEAT Leon Eurocup in 2015.

QEV’s COO Joan Orus was present at last month’s season launch, where a concept livery for the QEV entry was revealed, though the livery will likely be redesigned to match the Acciona branding.

Orus said at the launch: “It was a pleasure to be in Formula E from the beginning and it was a fantastic experience where we won the first season, it was a fantastic experience and we enjoyed growing up with Formula E along six seasons.

“Now we have the opportunity to join Extreme E from the beginning, it is an amazing opportunity that we cannot lose, we have to be there with our own team, we have to be with our own license and we have to be part of this all this history for the future, so it was a pleasure for us to be to be part of it and to be one of the teams that will join this championship.”
