BMW joins Audi in FE-exit post Season 7

BMW are set to leave Formula E at the end of Season 7, the manufacturer have confirmed.

The announcement comes just days after Audi revealed the 2020-21 season would also be its last as they shift their focus focus to sportscar racing.

BMW have been involved in Formula E from its inception, supplying the safety car.

In Season 3, they became a technical partner to Andretti, supplying their powertrain, and entered as a manufacturer two years later.

The German manufacturer claimed it has “exhausted the opportunities for this form of technology transfer”.

“As a partner from the word go, BMW has been instrumental in the success story of Formula E,” BMW said in a statement.

“However, when it comes to the development of e-powertrains, BMW Group has essentially exhausted the opportunities for this form of technology transfer in the competitive environment of Formula E.

“As the strategic focus of the BMW Group is shifting within the field of e-mobility, we will now concentrate on a model offensive and series production in large quantities with the fifth generation BMW E-drives.

“Even though we are leaving, our sporting ambitions remain unbroken. In Season 7, the BMW i Andretti Motorsport Team will give its all to achieve as much sporting success as possible with the BMW iFE.21 and drivers Maximilian Gunther and Jake Dennis.”
