Hughes confirmed as Venturi reserve driver

Former Formula 3 racer Jake Hughes joins Venturi as reserve driver for the 2021 Formula E championship.

Hughes has competed in a number of tests with NIO 333 and the Mercedes Formula E team, but will make the switch to Venturi for the reserve driver role.

The 26-year-old has a wealth of experience in single seater categories, having made his debut in Formula Renault in 2012 and taking his first title the following year.

Since then, Hughes has been a front runner in multiple European championships and joined the Formula 1 support bill with GP3 in 2018.

Last year Hughes finished seventh in the FIA Formula 3 championship and made his Formula 2 debut with a one off appearance at the Russian GP.

“The role of the reserve driver is crucial in Formula E, especially during these challenging times with a global pandemic,” explained Venturi team principal Susie Wolff. “Jake has done more than prove his talent and natural ability on the single-seater ladder, and we’re delighted to welcome him to ROKiT Venturi Racing.”

Hughes added: “I’m incredibly excited to join ROKiT Venturi Racing as the team’s reserve driver. I want to say a big thank you to Susie and the team for trusting me with this opportunity.

“I’ve driven Formula E cars in the past, most recently with Mercedes, so I feel ready to do my job. I’m looking forward to supporting Edo and Norman this season and I’m excited to help the team make the car as fast as possible while, of course, learning on the way.

“Formula E is an incredibly exciting championship and it feels fantastic to be back at a race track.”

Jaguar Racing and NIO have also recently confirmed new reserve drivers.
