Cassidy claims pole on the streets of New York

Nick Cassidy takes pole position in New York as championship leader Edoardo Mortara will start from the back of the grid.

Cassidy was fourth fastest during the group stages, 0.141s behind session winner Sebastien Buemi, but had the edge during the Super Pole shoot out.

Jean-Eric Vergne, who was second quickest in the group stages, came close to beating Cassidy, but a mistake in the opening sector put him 0.161s behind the pole sitter.

Alex Lynn finished third quickest overall ahead of Maximilian Gunether and Sebastien Buemi, who made a mistake at turn one. Pascal Wehrlein rounded out the top six.

There was no battle for on-track position during the first qualifying group, but that didn’t mean it was without incident.

Mortara was left bottom of the order after the car was mistakenly put in race mode rather than qualifying, leaving him with 50kWh less power than the rest of the field.

The mistake also hindered Rene Rast’s qualifying, as the Audi driver was directly behind Mortara on track and held up by the slower driver. He qualified P23 or 24.

Robin Frijns would go fastest in the group, but qualify P11 overall as the rest of the field set their lap times.

In group two, there were problems for Jaguar’s Sam Bird. After a crash in FP1, Bird’s car was reconstructed just in time for qualifying, but Bird found an issue on his out lap and was resigned to complete a slow lap. He attempted to get out of Oliver Rowland’s way on his qualifying lap, but Rowland made contact with the Jaguar and both cars came to a stop.

The red flag was waved, and both cars were able to get back to the pits and restart their qualifying run.

When the session resumed, Jean-Eric Vergne went fastest ahead of Pascal Wehrlein and Rowland.

Rowland would be out of the top six by the end of group three.

Cassidy, Guenther, Lynn and Lucas Di Grassi jumped up the order to end Q3 third through to sixth.

Buemi’s group four performance put him quickest overall and knocked Di Grassi out of Super Pole. He lines up seventh overall, ahead of Rowland, Alexander Sims and Andre Lotterer.
