Mortara and Vergne lead Marrakesh practice sessions

Championship contenders Eduardo Mortara and Jean Eric Vergne topped the first and second free practice sessions of the weekend, respectively

Action started on Friday afternoon, with the first free practice session. Mortara set a time of 1m18.670s, securing the lead of the session in the last couple of minutes and cutting short Stoffel Vandoorne’s dominance.

Jean Eric Vergne finished second, 0.166 seconds away from the Venturi driver. Completing the top three came Lucas di Grassi in the other Venturi car.

Andre Lotterer and Oliver Rowland finished fourth and fifth respectively, both less than half a second away from the lead.

Vandoorne, who had dominated the session, ultimately finished in P7, behind Antonio Felix da Costa. The top ten was completed by Robin Frijns and the Dragon Penske duo of Sergio Sette Camara and Antonio Giovinazzi.

Although there were no incidents during the session, Nyck de Vries kissed the wall in the last lap damaging his car. Nissan’s Sebastien Buemi had a similar fate, causing damage to the front of his car.

Action resumed on Saturday morning with an eventful second practice session. After scoring a P2 finish in yesterday’s run, Vergne set the fastest time today.

Team-mate da Costa followed suit while Mitch Evans completed the top three.

NIO’s Oliver Turvey scored a strong P4 finished, closely followed by Pascal Wehlein.

Mortara could not match yesterday’s results, ultimately falling to the 16th place. The top 10 was then completed by Buemi, Sette Camara, Oliver Askew, Sam Bird, and di Grassi.

The session was red flagged during its early stages, as Alexander Sims binned his car into the wall in turn 8. The driver came out unharmed but the car sustained several damages. Action resumed shortly after as marshalls retired the car from the track.
