Mortara quickest in Gen 2’s final free practice

Edoardo Mortara tops the final free practice session of the 2021-22 Formula E season while Mitch Evans beats championship rival Stoffel Vandoorne.

The two title contenders finished fourth and sixth quickest and were separated by two-tenths of a second.

The fastest lap changed hands multiple times in the first half of the session, with Vandoorne, Pascal Wehrlein and Andre Lotterer all taking turns at the top of the order.

Mortara’s first full power lap put him clear of the rest of the field by just 0.081s. Improvements continued to be found across the grid, though. The Venturi driver set a lap time of 1m21.019s in the closing stages of the session to improve on his best time and go almost three seconds clear of the rest of the field.

Antonio Felix Da Costa was the only driver to improve in the final minute of practice, jumping up to second.

Jake Dennis dropped down to third ahead of Evans, who was 0.439s slower than Mortara. Lucas Di Grassi split the two title rivals in P5, with Vandoorne taking the chequered flag sixth, 0.601s off the pace.

Robin Frijns took seventh, ahead of Andre Lotterer, Nick Cassidy and Oliver Turvey.

Further down the order, Sacha Fenestraz made his Formula E race weekend debut. Fenestraz, who has run in a number of rookie tests, replaces Antonio Giovinazzi at Dragon for the season finale. Giovinazzi suffered a hand injury during the inaugural Seoul E-Prix.

Fenestraz had a brush with the wall but was able to complete the full 30 minutes of practice. He was just over two seconds off Mortara’s pace by the chequered flag.

Oliver Askew did not complete the full 30 minutes. The Andretti driver came to a stop at turn 13 two-thirds of the way into the session, briefly bringing out the full course yellow.
