Jani leaves Dragon Racing after only one round

Neel Jani has left Dragon Racing after the first round of the 2017-18 Formula E championship.

Jani made his FE debut in Hong Kong last month, finishing 18th in both races in the double header event.

“As a result of changes that were unforeseen, Dragon Racing and I have decided that it is in the best interest for the future of the team and myself that we end our alliance,” he told motorsport.com.

“I would like to thank Dragon Racing for giving me the opportunity to experience Formula E, and I wish them all the best for the continuing season.”

It’s understood Jani isn’t seeking a seat at another team, and will instead focus on his World Endurance Championship campaign.

After splitting from Faraday Future during the summer break, Dragon Racing had been linked to Porsche, who are rumoured to be entering the series in the near future.

The rumour was only strengthened by the signing of ex-Porsche racer Jani. But it emerged during the Hong Kong weekend that the Porsche tie-in would not happen.

Dragon is yet to comment on Jani’s departure, and has not confirmed his replacement.

Ex-Dragon racers Loic Duval and Mike Conway are possibilities, as well as Robin Frijns and Jose Maria Lopez.
