X44 tops Qualifying 1 in Sardinia

Qualifying 1 for the Island X-Prix was dominated by the X44 duo of Sebastien Loeb and Cristina Gutierrez as the penultimate round of the season got underway on the Italian island of Sardinia.

Loeb and Gutierrez set a time of 11m05.105s to move up to the top of the standings. X44 was the fourth team to go out for their run and their pace was unchallenged by the teams that came afterwards.

In second position came Carlos Sainz and Leia Sanz, in the Acciona Sainz team. Their run was disrupted by flailing bodywork at the rear of their vehicle but it ultimately did not affect their speed as they claimed second spot in Qualifying 1.

The Veloce Team finished in third position, with Stephane Sarrazin and Emma Gilmour at the wheel. Just one second away from the top three came the Abt Cupra team of Matthias Ekstrom and Jutta Kleinschmidt. The top five was completed by the JBXE duo of Mikaela Ahlin-Kottulinsky and Kevin Hansen.

Rosberg X Racing came in sixth place; Molly Taylor lost time as the car rolled, but she was able to take control back and finish the lap. The Andretti United pair of Catie Munnings and Timmy Hansen finished seventh, the last team to set a time in the first round of qualifying, after Hansen had no power steering for his entire run before a car reset brought the system back for Munnings.

Both Ganassi and Xite Energy Racing could not finish their session due to damage sustained on the cars. For Ganassi, damage on the car’s rear suspension cut short their qualifying stint, while the steering broke for Xite Energy Racing halfway through their stint.
