Cape Town will host the fifth round of the 2022-23 Formula E season.
The electric racing championship has revealed an updated calendar for the first year of the Gen 3 era.
As well as Cape Town, the already announced Hyderabad and Sao Paulo will be making their Formula E debuts, hosting the fourth and sixth round of the championship respectively.
“We are excited to announce Cape Town as a new destination for our series in Season 9,” said Co-Founder and Chief Championship Officer Alberto Longo. “Our local partners are working incredibly hard to bring an ABB FIA Formula E World Championship race to the city, and we cannot wait to see the futuristic Gen3 race cars competing against the iconic natural backdrop of Table Mountain.”
Elsewhere, renovation works at the Seoul Olympic Stadium means Formula E the South Korean capital has been removed from the calendar. Seoul was set to host the 10th and 11th round of the season in May 2023. This had been replaced by a second Berlin E-Prix, making the German round a double header once again, and a “to be determined” slot. A second “to be determined” slot features at the end of June.
“Renovation work at the Olympic Stadium in Seoul, the venue for our first races in South Korea earlier this year, means we cannot return to the same location next season as originally planned, and so we are exploring our options in South Korea to replace this venue,” Longo said.
“We are also in active discussions with more world cities and venues to host an event on the other date without a confirmed location.”
