Attack Mode timing “crucial” to Wehrlein victory

Pascal Wehrlein has described his Attack Mode timing as crucial to his second FIA Formula E victory of the season in Diriyah.

Wehrlein took his first Attack Mode while battling Rene Rast for the race lead and swept past the McLaren driver when Rast went through the activation area. He then took his second Attack Mode while leading the race and managed to stay ahead of Rast.

In the closing stages of the race, a safety car put Jake Dennis and Sam Bird on his tail, but both drivers still had at least one Attack Mode to take.

Wehrlein believes taking Attack Mode before the safety car was crucial to his victory.

“This weekend has been incredible, a double victory,” he said. “Our race pace was incredible again and today we had the perfect strategy, using the Attack Modes at the right time and not having to use it again after the safety car – that was crucial.

“What can I say, just amazing for my team – all their hard work has finally paid off and I am so proud of them. This weekend is one I will never forget.”

While the result for Wehrlein was the same as his Friday performance, the German driver believed his second win of the season was harder as the rest of the field tries to answer Porsche’s early dominance.

“I would say yesterday was a bit more exciting as I had more cars to pass,” he said. “Today was not easy and I would say it was even a bit more difficult. Obviously, the others learned from yesterday.

“Sam Bird had quite a lot of energy in the end but still had to take his Attack Mode – so that probably saved us a bit.

“But you could clearly see they made steps forward today and that made it a bit more difficult.”
