Marrakesh E-Prix Driver Ratings

Formula E had its first race of 2019 in Marrakesh last Sunday and what a race it was: a late safety car caused by two team-mates colliding, a last-lap shootout as a result of the safety car and Attack Mode working well – something Maximilian Guenther used to his advantage.

But how did we rate the drivers after the Marrakesh E-Prix?

Using the same process as before, members of the Just Electric team gave ratings out of 10 with the average rating the one used. We’ve also given the highest rating as an indicator as to who we thought gave the best performances throughout qualifying and the race.

You can see the results below.

Jerome d'Ambrosio

Jerome d'Ambrosio

Highest rating: 10
Average rating: 9.5

d'Ambrosio made it two podiums in a row after taking victory for the Marrakesh E-Prix. Although he did not start near the front, he quietly made his way into podium contention throughout the race. A collision between the two BMW i Andretti Motorsport drivers allowed the Belgian to take advantage and claim victory - but only after a final-lap shootout where he was pressured by Envision Virgin Racing's Robin Frijns. The gap at the end was less than two tenths.

Robin Frijns

Robin Frijns

Highest rating: 10
Average rating: 9.25

Frijns claimed only his second podium in Formula E with second in Marrakesh. He was close to taking victory, losing out by 0.143s, but was unable to find a way past race winner d'Ambrosio. It was a promising second race of the season for Envision Virgin Racing after a difficult start in Saudi Arabia. The Audi-customer outfit managed to beat the works team with a double podium finish.

Sam Bird

Sam Bird

Highest rating: 9
Average rating: 8.75

Bird started off qualifying with a bizarre incident with team-mate Frijns and NIO driver Tom Dillmann. Dillmann's brakes failed, meaning he drove into Frijns who hit the rear of Bird. Bird's car was damaged but he still managed to snatch pole from Jean-Eric Vergne. In the race, he received damage after Vergne made a very ambitious move at Turn 1. Although the car had damage, Bird stayed with the lead group to eventually finish in third place.

Alexander sims

Alexander Sims

Highest rating: 8
Average rating: 7.75

It's perhaps a bit harsh for the driver who finished fourth to have an average rating below eight. But finishing fourth does not tell the story of Sims' race. He qualified in fourth place, only ahead of team-mate Antonio Felix da Costa through a penalty for the Portuguese driver. They were running one-two before the pair collided with 10 minutes to go. What should've been for BMW...

Jean-Eric Vergne

Jean-Eric Vergne

Highest rating: 9
Average rating: 8.25

Jean-Eric Vergne's race was certainly a bit of a rollerocaster. Starting from second, he attempted a late move down the inside of Sam Bird at Turn 1. It left the Frenchman spinning across the track and, after not being collected, last. His comeback through the field to fifth was a very good driver, but Vergne loses points for throwing away what could have been a podium result.

Andre Lotterer

Andre Lotterer

Highest rating: 9
Average rating: 8.2

It did not take a lot of time for Andre Lotterer to adapt to Formula E. In fact, the German was nominated for the Autosport’s ‘Rookie of the Year’ award, for his good results in Season 4. His versatility and talent were displayed once again in the streets of Ad Diriyah.
He ran at the front for an important part of the race, only to drop places as he got given a drive-through penalty. However, he was able to fight back and gain positions, finishing in P5 and playing an important role in Techeeath’s first place in the Teams’ Championship.

Lotterer is another DS Techeetah driver who had to make a comeback drive work, but he was also able to show the pace of his car to end up finishing in sixth place. A show of his usual attacking driver helped Lotterer secure another points finish. It was a decent effort to finish in sixth after starting 20th. Perhaps the only regret for Lotterer would be not beating Jean-Eric Vergne after his team-mate's spin.

Lucas di Grassi

Lucas di Grassi

Highest rating: 8
Average rating: 7.25

Di Grassi finished in the points despite starting outside the top 10, showing his, and his Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler car's pace. It was another positive race for the Season 3 champion who secured yet another points finish. It will be disappointing for di Grassi to see the two customer Audi cars ahead of the works team, but it is also a positive he can take that the Audi car is fast.

Sebastien Buemi

Sebastien Buemi

Highest rating: 8

It was another solid if not unspectacular race for Season 2 champion Sebastien Buemi. He started in third but fell backwards through the race before coming home to finish in the points. A points finish never looked off the cards for one of Formula E's most consistent performers. Qualifying will please Nissan as their Formula E adventure gets fully into swing, although Buemi falling backwards will be a concern.

Mitch Evans is one of Formula E's hottest properties when he's on form and he was on form during qualifying for the Marrakesh E-Prix. The Kiwi secured a points finish for the Jaguar outfit despite going backwards.

Daniel Abt

Daniel Abt

Another driver who had to make their way through the field, Daniel Abt started in 16th place before fighting through to finish in the points. A negative will be the lowly starting place, but the fight through the field will give hope to Daniel Abt and team-mate di Grassi. And the pace of the two customer Audi cars will give Abt some positives ahead of Santiago.

Jose Maria Lopez

Jose Maria Lopez

Jose Maria Lopez only just missed out on a points finish after ending the race in 11th place, but he did make up two places compared to his starting position. Finishing ahead of team-mate Maximilian Guenther will please the three-time WTCC champion but the fact the young German was so close - aided by a late Safety Car - will be a small disappointment.

Max Guenther

Maximilian Guenther

Guenther had a quiet but solid race to start 2019. Although he started the race towards the back of the grid, a clever Attack Mode strategy enabled him to finish just one place behind Dragon Racing team-mate Jose Maria Lopez. Guenther's first two races have been a building block as the young German tries to make his mark on the all-electric series.

Nelson Piquet had a better qualifying in Marrakesh when compared to Saudi Arabia, although he still started four places behind team-mate Evans. Oliver Rowland

Oliver Rowland

Rowland made his second appearance for Nissan e.dams and his third in Formula E and he qualified a respectable 12th. But he was another driver who fell backwards during the race to finish in 15th place. It was certainly not as good as his Saudi Arabia debut but Buemi's performance will give Rowland a positive to take given the pace of the Nissan.

It was another difficult day for highly-rated Turvey after starting in 12th place. Falling four places during the race meant Turvey finished in 16th place rather than moving forward, with a points finish out of the question for Turvey. His NIO team-mate also had a difficult day and the team picking up no points.

A mechanical issue in qualifying meant Dillmann started off in a bizarre incident where he hit Robin Frijns into Sam Bird, damaging the polesitter's car. It was a sign of things to come and he started 18th for the race. He was able to move up the field but sadly for the Frenchman, it was only one place and a points finish eluded him.

Another interesting race weekend for Antonio Felix da Costa - a three-place grid drop meant he started in sixth place. A mega start for the Portuguese driver meant he was soon in the top three and, eventually, found himself running one-two with team-mate Alexander Sims. With 10 minutes to go, the two drivers collided. Da Costa ended yup in the barrier while Sims finished in fourth.

If Wehrlein was hard to rate, then Vandoorne was even harder: a powertrain issue meant he did not get a proper time in and started 22nd. A collision with team-mate Paffett put the former McLaren F1 driver out of the race on lap one. HWA's race was summed up by their press release title: "Dismal day for HWA Racelab at the Marrakesh E-Prix". Brutal, but honest.
