Bird leads Jaguar 1-2 in Monaco practice

Sam Bird led a Jaguar 1-2 in the opening free practice session in Monaco.

Bird jumped to the top of the times with his final lap of the session, setting a 1m32.220s lap time. Mitch Evans, who also improved on his final lap of the session, was 0.033s slower than his team-mate but managed the quickest final sector of anyone.

Action was paused for roughly 12 minutes mid-way through the 45-minute session when Sergio Sette Camara came to a stop on track. The Dragon driver stopped at Rascasse in a position that left him unsighted for the rest of the field as they made their way back to the pits. Most of the other 23 cars managed to make their way around the stopped car, but Norman Nato ran into the back of Sette Camara’s Dragon. He wasn’t travelling at full speed and was able to get back to the pits without issue, but severely damaged his front wing in the process.

Lap times tumbled once the session resumed as the field began their full power laps. Antonio Felix Da Costa went quickest with a 1m32.576s time, but was displaced by Robin Frijns and then Bird.

Frijns, who had set the pace at 200kW, was bumped down to P3 by Evans while Da Costa finished fourth.

Pascal Wehrlein took fifth ahead of championship leader Nyck de Vries and the second Virgin car of Nick Cassidy.

Lucas Di Grassi, Andre Lotterer, and Alex Lynn completed the top 10.
