RXR extends championship dominance as Chip Ganassi retire from lead

Rosberg X Racing extends its championship lead with victory in the penultimate Extreme E X-Prix of the season.

Only two cars made it to the chequered flag in the Island X-Prix final as the demanding track damaged the cars of X44, JBXE and Chip Ganassi Racing.

Kyle LeDuc and Sara Price looked set to take their first victory of the season after a phenomenal opening lap from LeDuc. He had a lead of 45s when he handed the car over to team-mate Price, while Mollie Taylor and Jutta Kleinschmidt battled for P2. But not long after Price took to the wheel, she ground to a halt with a steering failure.

There was nothing she could do as Johan Kristoffersson and Mattias Ekstom closed the gap and passed her Chip Ganassi Racing run machine.

It was a relatively problem free lap for Kristoffersson. Taylor and Kleinschmidt had been nose to tail as they came into the switch zone, but Kristoffersson started his lap with a bit of breathing room. He continued to edge out ahead of Ekstrom, who managed to lose a door somewhere on his lap, to finish 24.58s ahead of the Abt driver.

Ekstrom was the only other finisher.

The first casualty of the race was Sebastien Loeb in the X44 car. He had gotten a relatively good start, taking a different lane to the rest of the field and coming out just behind LeDuc when the lanes merged again. But he suffered a slow puncture to the front left of his car. Loeb was managing the puncture when the steering broke and he was forced to retire the car.

Kevin Hansen and Mikaela Ahlin-Kottulinsky also had problems. Ahlin-Kottulinsky span early in the race but managed to make it to the halfway point to hand over to Hansen. They were still a way back from the rest of the field and were still behind Price when they hit problems. Hansen managed to limp past Price, though, retiring but earning third position in the final classification.
