Lopez: “The first race is definitely a very special one”

The 2018-19 Season will be Jose Maria Lopez’s third campaign in Formula E. We caught up with the Argentinian to discuss his expectations ahead of the season opener in Ad Diriyah.

For those who have been closely following Formula E since the beginning, those initial races might feel like a lot more time ago than just four years. But the series’ growth has been so immense that in a relatively short period of time, we have witnessed massive step forwards made by Formula E.

Among the talented drivers conforming the grid at every race, we have Lopez, three-time WTCC Champion and a current WEC driver. The Argentinian has been involved in Formula E since 2016, showcasing his skills at the wheel in every opportunity he has.

This month, ‘Pechito’ will embark on his third season in the fully-electric championship. “The first race is definitely a very special, as you have big changes, and there are a lot of new things”, he comments.

The introduction of the futuristic-looking Gen2 car, is one of the things fans are most looking forward to. “The new car is that is a big step forward, the car has changed a lot from the Gen 1 and is much more challenging not only for the drivers, but also for the engineers,” Lopez says.

“I don’t like to speculate from things but these cars have impressed me.”

For him and his colleagues, the journey they have had in the series has been accompanied with the growth it has had, as well as people’s favourable opinion on Formula E and electric racing.

“I think that definitely people’s opinion has changed for good… The series has grown impressively in such a short time. I can’t wait to see what happens in a few years time”.

He cites the level drivers on the grid have, as one of the reasons why people started to take a closer look at the series. “But most importantly the key has been the great races, overtaking, and the fact that the series allow people to interact with things like Fan Boost”.

Lopez will start his second season with Dragon, aiming to take the team back to the top positions in the Teams’ and Drivers’ Championships. His electric journey will start a new chapter in December 15th.
