Neel Jani will make a return to Formula E with the works Porsche outfit when the manufacturer joins the series.
Porsche will join the all-electric series for the 2019/20 season, Formula E’s sixth season.
Jani had agreed a deal with Dragon Racing for the 2017/18 season but left after the season-opening Hong Kong E-Prix double header.
He picked up a best result of 18th place.
“I’m very much looking forward to the new task,” Jani said. “Being part of an entirely new Porsche Motorsport programme for the second time, right from the beginning, means a lot to me.
“The technical and driving challenges are huge and our strong Formula E opponents have a significant advantage in experience. There is a lot of work ahead of us and I can’t wait for the roll-out.”
Jani has been a Porsche works driver since 2013 and won the 2016 Le Mans 24 hours in the 919 Hybrid.
He won the World Endurance Championship in the same year with Marc Lieb and Romain Dumas despite not finishing on the podium after Le Mans – the third race of the season.
“Without doubt, Neel is the right man for our new technologically trendsetting programme,” said Fritz Enzinger, Vice President Porsche Motorsport.
“Not only does he contribute speed, but he has a huge amount of single-seater experience. He has already driven in Formula E and is well established in Weissach as a development driver.”
