Hamilton makes Extreme E debut as Team Founder

Six-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton will make his debut in the Extreme E series as X44 team founder.

The British star announced today he would join the off-road electric series with his own team. Although he will not take part in the races, Hamilton said in an official statement that he would use his knowledge of the motorsports world as an input for the team’s development in the championship.

The outfit’s name X44 comes from his F1 racing number – 44, while the X derives from the name the championship’s races will have, X Prix.

“Extreme E is an exciting new sustainability initiative, and this is a great opportunity to be involved from the outset as a team founder”, commented Hamilton about his new venture.

“Extreme E really appealed to me because of its environmental focus. Every single one of us has the power to make a difference, and it means so much to me that I can use my love of racing, together with my love for our planet, to have a positive impact”, he added.

Hamilton has shown in several social media posts his commitment to raising awareness about climate change, and this is a new step on both his career and his fight against global warming.

“Lewis is hugely passionate about motorsport, but also shares our belief that we can use sport to highlight subjects which are vital to the world, such as climate change and equality”, said Alejandro Agag, founder and CEO of the series.

“Lewis is one of the most successful drivers of all time, and we’re all excited to see how his X44 team performs on and off the race track under his incredible guidance”, he added, highlighting the big names that are joining this new series.
