Vergne leads Techeetah 1-2 in penultimate qualifying

Jean-Eric Vergne leads a DS Techeetah 1-2 in qualifying for the penultimate race of Season 7.

The two-time champion beat team-mate Antonio Felix Da Costa by just 0.073s in the Super Pole shootout to go top of the order, while Vergne collects one point for being fastest in the group phase of qualifying and three for pole position.

Da Costa, who lies fifth in the championship standings, was the only driver from the first qualifying group to make it through to Super Pole. He topped the group with a time of 1m06.486s ahead of Jake Dennis and Sam Bird, who carries a three place grid drop into this race.

Championship leader Nyck de Vries was held up on his flying lap due to traffic and would only qualify fourth in the group, which dropped him to P19 overall.

Two drivers, Vergne and Edoardo Mortara, made it through from Group 2, which was overall a much smoother session.

Vergne would go quickest with a 1m06.239s, a time which wouldn’t be beaten until his own Super Pole run.

Mortara took P2 after the second group, but would drop back to third by the end of the group stages as Norman Nato slotted into P2.

Lucas Di Grassi and Sebastien Buemi also made it through to Super Pole.

Di Grassi would take third after the Super Pole runs, having locked up slightly on his out lap.

Mortara took fourth ahead of Nato and Buemi.

Mitch Evans narrowly missed out on a spot in Super Pole. He was 0.013s off Di Grassi’s time in the group stages and finished P7 overall ahead of Jake Dennis, who lies fourth in the championship standings.

Second in the standings Frijns ended up P23 after a mistake on his run, while third place Bird will start P15 after his grid drop.

Pascal Wehrlein and Maximilian Guenther rounded out the top 10.
