Frijns to make FE return with Virgin Racing

Formula E podium finisher Robin Frijns will return to the championship with newly named Envision Virgin Racing for the 2018-19 season.

Frijns will partner Virgin regular Sam Bird for the upcoming season, the team have revealed at theircar launch at the team’s headquarters at Silverstone.

“I’m very excited to be returning to Formula E with Envision Virgin Racing,” Frijns said.

“It’s great to be joining such a strong team and with the work we’ve already completed, it’s clear we have a very good package.

“The live event at Silverstone has showcased all that the team can do and it’s great to be a part of that.

“We now look ahead to pre-season testing, where we’ll be able to better gauge our on-track performance.”

Frijns last raced in FE in 2017, where he finished 13th overall for MS Amlin Andretti. Since then, the Dutch racer has competed in a range of sportscar and tin top racing series, including DTM and the Blancpain GT cup.

He will run alongside Sam Bird, who will start his fifth season with the Virgin Racing squad after narrowly missing out on the FE drivers’ title last year.

“It’s great to be remaining with the team for a fifth season,” he said.

“The relationship we have developed over the last 45 races has been incredible and I’m excited to see it continue to strengthen.

“Season five is a new era for every team – with the introduction of the Gen2 car – but particularly for us, as we are now joined by Envision Group.

“The team has worked tirelessly over the summer and are ready to return to the track for pre-season testing.”

Virgin have teamed up with digital energy company Envision Group – creators of the Internet of Things platform EnOS – after splitting from manufacturer DS.

Team boss Sylvain Filippi hopes the new partnership will help innovation both on and off track.

“We’re delighted to be collaborating with such an innovative, like-minded and sustainability-focused company like Envision Group,” he said.

“For us, Formula E has always been more than just a racing champion, it’s a chance to be truly innovative and help accelerate change towards a better future.

“As such, we’ve always been passionate about addressing the wider environment issues and the reasoning behind our Racing Against Climate Change programme. Now with Envision Group onboard, we feel we can strengthen this message even further.”
